Follow Your Flow

For many years, I was certain that

Finding my purpose

Was critical to success.

Without a clear answer to

“What is my Why?”

Wouldn’t I be leaving out a huge force of power

From the performance equation?

When it comes to finding purpose,

I have read the books, watched the TED Talks, listened to podcasts,

And

Deeply reflected upon this journey of searching.

Is it just a search for purpose? Or maybe a desire to make the search less complex?

Recently, my thoughts about purpose shifted directions...

As surfing Waves

Shaped a new outlook.

When I started to paddle the surfski a few years ago,

I was in a constant state of searching.

Searching for

More efficient paddle strokes

More effective linking of Waves or

Just a better Wave than the one I was riding.

This is not necessarily a bad instinct.

But, the searching created a gap

Between what I wanted next

And

Where I actually was.

Which means,

My chase for what’s next

Increased the separation from

Opportunities that surrounded me

In the present moment.

Instead of searching for flow,

Waves teach us to

Follow the Flow.

At sea, fully engage with the strokes, links, and Waves that are here now.

Then, repeat this process.

Over and over.

Progress is realized only with what is available to us now.

The same with purpose in life -

Instead of finding it,

Follow it.

Moment to moment

With simple prompts like,

“Am I Following my Flow right now?”

"How can I Follow my Flow right now?"

Or in a state of challenge, discomfort, or uncertainty,

“How could I better Follow my Flow right now?”

These are useful when we:

Without the wait. Without lack. Without search...

Simply Follow Your Flow.

With gratitude, Joe
