Camp Cup Challenge: Barking Up The Right Tree

For years, stakeholders in and supporters of the whitewater slalom community have been pushing for more support of the development of young paddlers. While those calls are being made, a long-standing youth development race in North Carolina has been flying beneath the radar screen of the larger slalom community. Maybe that’s about to change as the 2009 Camp Cup Challenge on the Nantahala River recently drew more than 110 young racers, about 90 more competitors than attended the U.S. Jr. Slalom Team Trials on the same river a few months earlier. Huge props to Sean and Kristin Bierle for making Camp Cup Challenge happen and growing the event into one of the best attended slalom races in the U.S.  Here’s a short interview with Sean accompanied by highlights of the race:
